The written history of the whole of Finland begins in Köyliö. According to a famous legend, in 1156 peasant Lalli killed Bishop Henry on the ice of Lake Köyliönjärvi. The island of Bishop St. Henry, Kirkkokari, is the only Roman Catholic pilgrimage site in the Nordic countries.
